Forty-nine athletic records broken in 2017-18 school year
USD racked up 49 broken school records by 23 athletes in nearly half of the Division 1 sports provided by the school this academic year.
Shanice Cannigan, a senior hurdler on the track and field team, holds the school records for 60-meter hurdles (8.41 seconds) and the pentathlon (4,106 points).
Cannigan said it was an honor to break these records.
“It feels good to break a championship record,” she said. “I’ve been training hard for it.”
Cannigan said she was surprised so many student-athletes broke records this year.
“That means our program is working really well,” she said.
Hunter Padgett, a junior exercise science major on the swimming and diving team, holds three records for USD: 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles.
Padgett said the training helped him break these records.
“It pushed me harder than I ever have been pushed,” he said. “That’s all on the coaches: Jason (Mahowald), Steve (Mohs) and Jake (Knowles). They pushed me as hard as they could in practice.”
Padgett said USD athletics is “growing” because of the record-breaking successes.
“We might still be a smaller school, but each sport’s growing,” he said. “Everybody who broke a record deserves it.”
