The time to register to vote is now
One of the most common ways that Americans can show their interest in politics is by becoming informed voters.
Before you can vote in any election, however, you must register to vote in the precinct that your address is located in. For college students, this can become confusing as they are located in their college’s town, but their voter registration address may be wherever they are from.
For South Dakotans, the last day that we are able to register to vote is Oct. 19. This deadline is almost one month away, and while registering to vote does not take very long at all, if you continue to put it off, you could easily miss this deadline and would be denied your voting rights.
The second hardest part of voting as a college student is how you can actually go about voting. For most students, they live more than an hour away, so it is hard for them to go back to where their voter registration address is to vote; they instead get what we call an absentee ballot.
Once you are registered to vote, you can request a ballot by mail at any time through the Secretary of State’s website — this goes for any state — and once you receive the ballot, you fill it out and send it back in.
Again, for South Dakotans, the deadline to request an absentee ballot is Nov. 2 as they would need time to send it to you. However, the election day is Nov. 3, so make sure you’re giving yourself and the state enough time to get your absentee ballot to you and give yourself enough time to fill it out and get it returned to them before the election deadline.
Luckily, in South Dakota we have what is called an early voting period that runs from Sept. 18 to Nov. 2, where you have the ability to go to your precinct within this time frame and vote early if you are unable to fill out an absentee ballot or make it home in time to vote in person.

Voting is your way to get involved in politics and what is happening in your country. Don’t miss your chance to get involved because you procrastinated registering to vote.
