Vermillion Tanagers high schools sports update

Beginning this fall The Volante will be covering Vermillion Tanager athletics weekly. The Volante hopes to continue covering high school sports to raise awareness for local athletes.

Football

The Vermillion Tanagers kicked off its first football game of the season inside the newly renovated DakotaDome Friday night. The Tanagers took on the Belle Fourche Broncs and won the game in a shutout 35-0.

The non-conference game was the first of nine games for the Tanagers this fall.

Senior Connor Saunders scored a touchdown four different ways for the Tanagers. Saunders ran, passed, caught and picked off a Belle Fourche pass to score. 

On the defensive side, Nick Sorensen led with four tackles. Saunders picked off two Bronco passes.

Jack Kratz and Reese Proefrock both received touchdown passes for Vermillion. Charlie Ward successfully threw 164 yards and two scores for the Tanagers. 

The Tanagers are set to play this Friday at 7 p.m. at Tea (1-0).

Boy’s Soccer

The Tanagers have seen early success on the field this fall in the Class A division. winning the last three games against James Valley Christian (7-1), Harrisburg (4-0) and Groton Area (6-1).

The Tanagers take on Freeman Academy Thursday at 5 p.m. in Vermillion.

Girl’s Soccer

The Vermillion girl’s soccer team started Class A play against Garretson Aug. 14, winning 5-0 on their home field. After a season opening win, the Tanagers lost to West Central (0-3) and Harrisburg (0-2). The girl’s tied against Tea Area (2-2), and found a way to fight back and win against Groton Area (4-2).

The Tanagers will head to West Central Thursday at 6 p.m. to take on the Trojans.

Volleyball

The Tanagers volleyball team began with a win against West Central after a five-set match against the Trojans. After losing the first set (13-25) Vermillion fought back to win set two (25-15). West Central took set three against Vermillion (15-25). The Tanagers won the final two sets to secure the win (25-23) (15-8).

The Tanagers faced off against Wagner and lost in three sets 22-25, 15-25, 6-25.

Vermillion volleyball will return to their home court to face off against South Sioux City, Neb. at 7:30 p.m.
