Bringing the Community Together Through Ribs, Rods & Rock’N Roll

Ribs, Rods, & Rock’N Roll’s mission is to give back to the community and celebrate the end of harvest. This annual event takes place in downtown Vermillion, South Dakota, blocking off streets for activities people can enjoy.

This event took place on Sept. 5 and 6. Some activities included games such as giant Jenga and Cornhole, a dunk tank, and a family area for children that includes a bouncy house. This event provided sweet treats and barbeque ribs with live music heard throughout the streets.

Sky Bartlett, a vendor selling jars of cakes from Cakes by Monica says, “I just love being able to see all the people out there. I think that’s my favorite part.”

Bartlett loves to see the community spending time with each other.

“Everyone’s coming together and just kind of spending time with each other in a wholesome environment.” Bartlett says.

She describes her feelings for Vermillion by saying, “I think a lot of people see Vermillion as a stepping stone, but it’s become home really quick for me.”

Blair DeBoer owns the riding company, Misty Plains Pony Co. Although originally from Union, Nebraska, DeBoer provided pony rides for children.

“I like bringing joy to kids’ faces and their parents – that’s the best part.” DeBoer said.

Anonymous volunteers said they participated to help serve the community.

One described Vermillion saying, “It’s a small town vibe, but everybody here is so welcoming, and I really enjoy it.”
