As the calendar flips to October, the weather is getting cooler while food and beverages are getting heartier. People and businesses around Vermillion have been getting into the fall spirit in their own ways.
USD senior Emily VanLaecken said that she gets into the fall spirit by “wearing flannels with tall boots, watching scary movies and enjoying pumpkin-flavored foods and beverages.”
VanLaecken isn’t the only one who thinks flannels are a good way to get into the fall spirit.
Tamie and Chloe Nielsen, co-owners of local Vermillion boutique Chlotique, said flannels will be a huge trend this fall along with other fashions.
“Fringe is a huge trend this fall, we are seeing it on everything from shoes to coats to dresses,” Tamie Nielsen said.
While changes in fashion trends this fall are huge, there is also the addition of new fall-themed foods.
Jim Waters, the owner of Cafe Brule, encourages people to stop in and check out new items the restaraunt will be featuring.
“We’ve got some different cupcakes including an apple pie cupcake, and then we have our fall-themed drink specials: blackberry apple cider, pumpkin chai and Harry’s Butter Beer latte,” he said.
While Cafe Brule has many sweets to choose from this fall, Waters also recommends trying the cafe’s house-made chili.
Some people may love the food and fashion that fall brings, but USD senior Alex Pinney said he enjoys fall because with it comes the return of football.
“What I enjoy most about fall is being able to hang out with friends while watching football along with going to bonfires together,” he said.
Students who are interested in more hands-on opportunities this fall will find various events going on around campus.
USD Student Activities offers Pinterest in the Pit to students on certain Fridays where people can complete their own Pinterest project.
The Campus Activities Board will also be presenting Mike Ramsdell “When Elephants Fight” today in the MUC Ballroom, which is open to all students. CAB will also host the musical comedy group Dauk Boom on Saturday, which is also open to all students.
“Go to everything, as much as you can,” said Eric Roach, the president of CAB. “Get your Coyote points and meet new people.”
