USD falls to ORU in overtime

USD women’s soccer team was back in action Sunday after just a day break from their Friday game. They played Oral Roberts University at home on the First Bank and Trust field.

Throughout the game, the Coyote defense held strong, giving up few opportunities to ORU. At the half, USD and ORU had both recorded three shots and two shots on goal.

However, towards the end of the game, the weariness of playing two games in three days began to show for the Coyotes, as they gave up more opportunities to ORU. By the end of regulation, USD added just one shot, while ORU added four shots and one shot on goal.

With the score still 0-0 at the end of the second half, the game went into overtime. With only just 1:52 into overtime, Anna Gornell, an ORU sophomore midfielder, slipped the ball past the Coyote defense to give the Golden Eagles the game.

Sydney Hardin, senior goalkeeper, was proud of her defense throughout the game, only allowing ORU the single overtime goal.

“I think our communication throughout the whole game really helped,” she said, “They (ORU) really had to work for that final goal.”

Hardin made three saves during the game and played the full match.

Sophomore forward Taryn LaBree tallied two shots and one shot on goal.

“We had some great build ups,” she said, “We got in little slip through balls from our midfield.”

The Coyotes fall to 2-11-0 on the season and 0-3-0 in the Summit League. They travel to Indiana next, to play another Summit League game against Fort Wayne, 1-11-0 overall, 0-2 Summit, on Oct. 13.

Head coach Mandy Green is looking to the next game for a change in luck, but not a change in game plans.

“We’re doing a lot of really good things,” she said, “We’re going to see where we can tweak some things, but for the most part we’ll keep things the same and keep at it.”
