Go figure, it’s harder than I thought
This past year I have been working at an ice rink. It is a lot of fun and a pretty easy job. Thankfully, I never had to learn how to ice skate while I was there.
But with the Winter Olympics around the corner, I wanted to see how well I could do. I knew I obviously couldn’t do what the Olympians could because they have been practicing for years. But I work at an ice rink, surely I should know how to ice skate.
I thought it couldn’t be too hard. Right?
I was so wrong. I can’t even begin to count how many times I fell on my face.
One time, I hit a low point and tried using one of the walkers for little kids. Somehow I still fell. It was even more embarrassing because when I was laying on my back trying to figure out why the sky was in front of my face, a little kid skated up to me and asked if I was okay.
After I reassured the kid I was okay and did not need them to call an ambulance, I hobbled as quickly as I could to the warming house. I am not going to lie, I thought about crawling instead of walking. When I got back to the regular ground, I took my skates off and didn’t go back on the ice for a few days.
It took me a few hours to learn how to look like I knew what I was doing.
It is so much worse than high heels. The people who tell you ice skating is the same as roller skating are lying to you, do not believe them.
Now, I am watching the Olympics and the figure skaters and I am in awe. They are jumping and spinning in the air. Them skating and dancing on ice is 10x more graceful and elegant than I can even walk. The amount of work they put into routines is impressive.
Attempting to ice skate myself has made me see just how awesome these athletes are and I hope they are satisfied with what they do.
