BLOG: Ode to the coffee people
It’s very clear to anyone who even knows me remotely that I have a coffee addiction. It’s the elixir of life and it’s amazing. I can drink it black, with cream, with sugar, or with bacon for all I care — as long as it’s coffee, I’m happy.
As a result of this, I interact a lot with the people who make and pour the coffee behind the counter at the UBrew and Neuharth Café. They are the givers of the coffee; the givers of life. Without these people to get me my daily (and sometimes hourly) caffeine fix, I don’t think I would have survived college this long.
But these people get abused. Not in a serious physical way, but I’ve seen them treated like crap so many times when they’ve done nothing to deserve it. People ordering their drinks can just be so rude and abrupt sometimes, and it’s completely uncalled for.
Granted, if the coffee people are doing something weird to our coffee and I just don’t know about it, please clue me in and I’ll join in the rudeness. But seriously people, whatever happened to, “Hello, how are you?” “Please,” and “Thank you?”
As a former fast food worker (Dairy Queen, represent) I would like to say that sometimes, believe it or not, the people behind the counter are having a bad day. Sometimes, believe it or not, they might take it out on you.
Like you’ve never done that before? Cut the coffee people some slack when they’re cranky. There’s no need to post about it on USD confessions. Instead, try complimenting them or being nice to them — they’re probably having a horrible day and anything you could do to make it better is always appreciated. It’s a great opportunity to get some good karma.
This is a plea to be nice to the people who handle your food and drinks. They deserve it.
