Exercise Science Club aims to inspire students’ career choices

The Exercise Science Club at USD is looking to get people off of their couches and outside exercising.

Brett Comstock, a professor and faculty adviser of the club, said it’s a great club for any student to participate in.

“A freshman or sophomore can make a bigger impact,” he said.

The first meeting on Oct. 5 drew in more students than last year, and members were all engaged and excited, Comstock said.

Hunter Wilkes, senior and co-president of the club, said the club is growing and they want to be able to impact students.

“Our purpose is to teach incoming kinesiology majors what it is to be in their field,” Wilkes said.

Wilkes said the club is aimed toward students interested in sports medicine, exercise science or even working with children. Comstock said the club will also be applicable to the exercise science department.

“We are changing as a department as well,” Comstock said. “It’s an exciting time, but it’s not going to come easy.”

The club focuses on getting people involved with physical activity and is a way to show sports science students that their career choice will be worthwhile.

“Our job is to shed more light on their interests,” Comstock said. “Maybe they don’t know what they’re interested in, coming through our club.”

Connor Fitzsimmons, a junior and the co-president of the club, said the club is trying to appeal to new students.

“We’re just trying to expand to all the new students and what you can do with an exercise science degree,” he said.

Comstock said that because of the new leaders in the club, there are more ideas being pitched for them to grow as a club.

Wilkes said the club is planning on working with children, motivating them to move and be healthy, instead of playing video games inside all day. The club’s intention is to brainstorm ideas for events and to be more involved with the campus, but to also get the members more involved and attend any planned events.

“Pretty much all of us have great ideas,” Wilkes said. “We all kind of have the same role, same goals.”

Last year the club worked with Jolly Elementary School and played dodgeball with the children, which Wilkes and Fitzsimmons said was an enjoyable experience and is an event they would like to do again this year.

The club wants to bring in guest speakers for events as well as that will benefit children and the elderly in the community.

“We’re just trying to get more people involved, get more ideas,” Fitzsimmons said.

Though the club was around last year, there were few members. Wilkes and Fitzsimmons decided to step in as co-presidents to show the importance it had to offer.

“I didn’t want the club to just die out,” Wilkes said. “This year we’ll have multiple events where we evolve with the college community. I just wanted to take our club to the next level and get more involved. I’m really excited to see where we take this club.”
