December is the month of great movies
Bring on the Christmas lights, hot chocolate, wool socks and countless times watching “Elf,” because it’s finally December.
This time of year also means some of the best films are coming out just in time for awards season with a few blockbusters thrown in the mix.
Here are some films to watch out for this December when not relaxing by the fireplace.
The first of these films is “Joy” starring Jennifer Lawrence and directed by David O. Russell. The duo has previously teamed up for Academy Award nominated films “American Hustle” and “Silver Linings Playbook.”
“Joy,” is based on the true story of Joy Mangano, who made a fortune by inventing more than 100 products – some of which became bestsellers after featured on the Home Shopping Network.
The film also stars favorites Bradley Cooper and Robert Di Nero, who have been featured alongside Lawrence in Russell’s previous films. There has already been talk of an Academy Award nomination for Lawrence’s portrayal of Mangano. The film premieres Dec. 15.
For those looking for something more familiar yet dramatic, a new adaption of “Macbeth” starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard was released Dec. 4.
“Macbeth” is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved and famous plays, and the new adaptation promises to be lavish and visually stimulating while also providing memorable performances.
Another drama to be on the look out for is “The Revenant,” directed by previous Academy Award-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as early 19th-century explorer Hugh Glass. The film, inspired by real events, follows Glass through life-threatening ordeals including a bear attack and battles with Native Americans.
The movie was shot in sequence using only natural light, an odd decision made by Iñárritu. Tom Hardy stars alongside DiCaprio, and there are already talks of DiCaprio finally getting his Oscar for Best Actor. The film will be released Dec. 25.
If one is not interested in dramas, then SNL alumni Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s new comedy “Sisters” is the film to see.
The movie that hits theaters Dec. 18 revolves around a pair of 30-something sisters who decide to throw one final party before their parents sell their childhood home. It is guaranteed to be a good time with its two leading ladies, plus a very strong supporting cast including Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz and John Leguizamo.
Of course, this list could not be complete without the mention of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” While little details are known about the film that will be released Dec. 18, it is already being predicted to make more $600 million in its global opening.
One thing is for sure – this is bound to be a great month for cinema.
