First-year: ‘Create your own college experience’
Speaking on behalf of all first-years, simply put, college is a whirlwind.
Going into college, you may carry with you stereotypes of the college experience, what it’s like, all of the parties you’ll attend and all of the new friends you’ll make.
But it’s not perfect, and if you expect it to be, you’re in for some disappointment. In fact, if you don’t once feel lonely, anxious or frustrated sometime during the year, I’d be shocked.
Take care of yourself. Life can be hectic, and it can be easy to neglect your physical and emotional health for the sake of a test score or social life. Utilize the free campus health resources and counseling, since they won’t always be free.
Open yourself up to opportunities. Personally, I never would have imagined myself at the place where I’m at right now, celebrating the achievements I’ve accomplished and appreciating the people I’ve met.
The first new people you meet might not be your best friends, and the first activity or class you try might not be for you, but don’t fret.
The first weekend of orientation activities will feel like the longest two days of your life, but once you dive into your daily schedule and classes, you’ll find your way, trust me.
Stay present. The weeks can seem to drag on, but moments pass in a blink of an eye. Planning a future is important, but life’s too short and unpredictable to be dwelling on the possibilities. You’re only in college once, so enjoy the little moments. Explore campus and take advantage of everything college has to offer.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to create your college experience. Embrace it with an open mind and eager attitude. Your life at USD might not look exactly like a movie or TV show, but it will be one worth treasuring for years to come.
