Coyote women’s soccer sweep the weekend

Over the weekend, the Coyote women’s soccer team competed in two games.

The Coyotes went into the weekend with a 7-3-2 record on the season and a record of 3-2 in Summit League play.

The first game was Friday, Oct. 15 against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, who are 1-2 in Summit League play. The Coyotes defeated the Fighting Hawks 1-0.

In the game, the Coyotes were without one of their starting forwards—Tiannah Moore—due to injury. In the absence of Moore, junior Shaylee Gailus fulfilled her position.

Gailus did not take her opportunity for granted, playing for 60 minutes and taking two shots on the goal.

In Friday’s matchup, senior midfielder Alexis Mitchell scored the opening and only goal at the 43-minute mark. The goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Hattie Gilbin.

With the goal, Mitchell now tallies six goals on the season and leads the team. The assist from Gilbin on Mitchell’s goal was her first on the season and first of her Coyote career.

The Coyotes also beat the Fighting Hawks in shots and corner kicks on the day, with three more shots (17-14), and 10 more corner kicks (12-2).

Senior goalie Emma Harkelroad also out-saved her North Dakota counterpart 4-3.

With this win, the Coyotes move their overall record to 8-3-2 and their Summit League record to 4-2. With this record, USD moved up to No. 4 in the Summit League Standings.

The second game for the Coyotes was Sunday, Oct. 17 against the North Dakota State Bison in their annual Pink Game. The Coyotes were holding on to a two-game win streak against the Bison.

North Dakota State came into the game with a 2-2 Summit League record. The Coyotes defeated the Bison 5-0.

The opening goal came in the 30-minute mark of the match, scored by senior defender Jordan Centineo and assisted by senior forward Maddison Sullivan.

Centineo’s day did not stop there, as she scored again in the 46th minute off an assist from Gailus. Gailus recorded her first assist of the season.

Gailus took a break from assisting to score a goal of her own in the 48th minute off an assist from Sullivan.

Centineo found the net for a third time off an assist from Giblin. This assist gives Centineo her first career hat-trick as a Coyote. Along with those three goals from Centineo, she has five on the season.

The Coyotes scored again off an own goal by the Bison goalie Sofia Howe in the 87-minute mark of the match.

The Coyotes move to 9-3-2 on the season with a Summit League Record of 5-2 with only three games left in Summit League play. The Coyotes’ next matchup is against in-state rival South Dakota State University Oct. 24 at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex in Vermillion.
