Tennis wins two matches on West Coast swing

USD’s tennis program went to the west coast for a trio of matches over the weekend, picking up a pair of wins to add to their record.

The weekend started at Eastern Washington, where the Coyotes grabbed a 5-2 win. USD suffered a 5-2 setback against Gonzaga Saturday and defeated Montana State Sunday 4-1. A fourth match, scheduled for Saturday against Seattle, was canceled.

Against Eastern Washington, the Coyotes captured five wins in singles play and one in doubles play. Fifth years Habiba Aly and Jana Lazarevic won their singles flights, but lost as a duo in flight one doubles. The other USD wins in singles play came from redshirt junior Estella Jaeger, freshman Bea Havlickova and junior Eesha Varma (by walkover). The doubles win came from Jaeger and senior Anna Marija Bukina.

Saturday, Aly and Jaeger won their flight of singles play in three sets each for USD in the 5-2 loss against Gonzaga. Lazarevic and Aly won the No. 1 doubles, but the other two doubles teams for USD lost, giving the Bulldogs the doubles point.

Sunday’s match-up with Montana State went USD’s way 4-1 after winning three-of-four singles matches and earning the doubles point.

Aly, Jaeger and Havlickova won their singles matches, each in two sets. Lazarevic lost her singles match in two sets, and took a loss with Aly in doubles play. Jaeger and Bukina won No. 2 doubles 6-3 and Havlickova and senior Natka Kmoskova won the No. 3 doubles 6-0.

The Coyotes are back in action Feb. 12 against Memphis.
