Fall Scrimmages Set Pace for Spring Softball
To prepare for the upcoming spring season, the USD softball team kicked off the start of their exhibition games at the beginning of the month.
Some of the fall practice games have been against Mount Marty, Midland and Augustana. The Coyotes are set to begin their actual season in February.
“We use the fall, and fall games, to introduce and practice ideas and techniques. We also use the fall to identify strengths and weaknesses in order to shape strategy and player development,” said Head Coach Robert Wagner.
“All of our pitchers have shown the ability to pitch and get hitters out. We do need to be more consistent however. Our returning players have done a great job setting and holding our standards,” said Wagner.
Some key players returning for USD this year include juniors Autumn Iverson and Abi Brown. These individuals were named to the 2025 Summit League Academic All-League Team with a 4.0 and 3.95 GPA, respectively.
Brown played in 47 games last season and started in 42 of them. She obtained a .327 batting average, while leading the Coyotes in home runs with six. She ended the 2024 season with 34 total hits, six doubles, and 21 RBIs.
Iversen played and started in 55 games in center field and finished with a .283 batting average. She was second for the Coyotes with 29 RBIs and 11 doubles. Iversen had 12 multi-hit games, in which 10 with multiple RBIs.
“This group has shown amazing comradery. If we can develop our skills and understand the game, it will make for an exciting spring,” said Wagner.
The Coyotes are led by Wagner and assistants Shannon Pivovar, Jessica Rogers and Caylyn Wagner, along with graduate assistant Kori Wedeking.
