BLOG: Finding motivation

Numerous people, myself included, are looking to improve their self-image and want to do so through a healthy lifestyle. If you’re like me, it’s not too hard to get started. Something new can be fun if you’re eager for the change. The problem is keeping it up.

How do you stick with something new, like a healthy lifestyle? It’s all about the motivation behind it. Motivation can be found in the easiest of places, and hopefully these different approaches will help you find yours.

I would like to start with the TV show, “The Biggest Loser.” Who doesn’t love that show? I know I do. It is full of motivation and inspiration and you are constantly reminded of the contestants’ reason for why they want to lose weight. Whether it is for their family or for themselves, “The Biggest Loser” reminds the audience of the strong motivation these people have to keep going day after day.

This show really motivates me. I know after last week’s episode I was so ready to hit the gym because it reminded me how important it is to stay healthy.

If “The Biggest Loser” isn’t your cup of tea, you could try an inspirational film instead. I recently watched “Never Back Down” because I was looking for the inspiration to really push myself. Although I am not waking up at 6 a.m. to workout just yet, I know it is possible to push myself beyond what I think my limits are.

Sometimes your motivation needs to be a tad more drastic. For example, I recently signed up for my first half marathon. I asked a friend to do it with me and hold me accountable. Now, when I think I want that quart of ice cream or an extra hour of sleep, I remember I have to run 13 miles in May.

My last bit of advice when it comes to motivation is pretty small, but I’ve seen it do wonders, especially if you love music and use it to push you during a workout. Try making a new playlist; add some new songs and revive oldies. I love listening to music, and what better excuse, and multitask, is there than to workout while listening to your new playlist. Music is my motivation to go on my long runs because I really do get to hear the music while doing good things for my body.

These approaches may not work for everyone. I know they don’t work for my roommate, but she has a different way to get her going. Her motivation is watching a new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” and using the stationary bike.

The moral of the story is to find the motivation that pushes you, and you will be unstoppable.
